Biography

John Schroer was born in Evansville , Indiana, on Dec. 31, 1951. His dad, Willie, was the manager of a car dealership and his mother, Wilma, was a school teacher. His mother and father are still alive today and have moved to Franklin. They live at NHC Place in Cool Springs.

John graduated from high school in Evansville and received his bachelor's degree in business from Indiana University. He moved to Nashville after graduation in 1974 and moved to Franklin in 1976. While working at PPG Industries in the mid 70's, John received his MBA from the University of Tennessee's Nashville campus with a specialization in finance. Upon graduation, John went to work with Third National Bank in the commercial lending department. While at Third National Bank, John became vice president of the Young Mortgage Bankers Association of Nashville. 

In 1980, John started Sharondale Properties with the owner of Sharondale Construction Company. While at Sharondale Properties, John was instrumental in the development of many projects in Franklin and Williamson County. Sharondale Properties developed Brentwood Oaks Apartments, Brentwood Place Shopping Center, Brentwood Business Center, Overlook Office Park, Forrest Crossing and Williamson Square. Sharondale Properties invested more than $50 million in Franklin alone during the 1980's.

In 1989, after the tax reform act of 1986 and the subsequent crash of the real estate market, Sharondale Properties and John, as one of the owners, were forced to file bankruptcy. In 1990, John started Southland Management & Development Company. Originally, Southland provided development expertise to banks and financial institutions on properties that banks had taken over do to the real estate crash. Southland then expanded into the homeowner association management business and by 2000 managed over 10 Franklin Homeowners Associations. Southland also develops small commercial properties, mainly around large retail centers. Southland developed and owns several specialty shopping centers on Carothers Parkway in Cool Springs.

John and his family are members of Franklin First United Methodist Church. He serves in his church as Chairman of the Site Selection and Building Committee. He is a past board member of Williamson County United Way and a founding board member of Franklin Tomorrow. He serves: on the Franklin Special School District Board of Education as chairman, on the Tennessee School Boards Association as vice president, and on the Education First Foundation board.
